The Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance, today introduced legislation in the House of Commons to implement key measures from Budget 2008. The bill also includes language to protect the Government’s fiscal plan from the effects of Bill C-253.
“Budget 2008 is a plan that is prudent, focused and responsible in this period of economic uncertainty,” said Minister Flaherty. “The bill being tabled today will benefit all Canadians with measures such as the new Tax-Free Savings Account. It will also protect the fiscal framework from a Private Member’s bill that risks plunging the federal government back into deficit.”

The Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance, today tabled in the House of Commons a Notice of Ways and Means Motion to implement Budget 2008 tax measures. The Notice also includes provisions to protect the Government’s fiscal plan from the effects of Bill C-253.
“Budget 2008 is a plan that is prudent, focused and responsible in this period of economic uncertainty,” said Minister Flaherty. “Now, having received approval of the House of Commons for the budget framework, we are presented with a Private Member’s bill that risks plunging the federal government back into deficit. Our government told Canadians we would maintain a balanced budget and we intend to keep our word.”

The Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance, will table the Government’s third budget on February 26, 2008. The Minister will present it in the House of Commons at approximately 4 p.m. EST that day.
“In this budget, we will be doing what households and businesses do when things are uncertain: we will be acting in a responsible manner,” said Minister Flaherty.
