2008 Indexation Adjustment for Personal Income Taxes

The following is now available on the CRA Web site:

Fact Sheet

Each year, certain personal income tax amounts are indexed to inflation using the Consumer Price Index data, as reported by Statistics Canada.

Increases to tax bracket thresholds, personal amounts and other amounts relating to non-refundable credits, as well as the refundable medical expense supplement and Old Age Security repayment threshold, will take effect as of January 1, 2008. Increases to the Canada Child Tax Benefit (including the National Child Benefit supplement and the Child Disability Benefit) and the Goods and Services Tax Credit will take effect as of July 1, 2008, to coincide with the beginning of the “program year” for payment of these benefits.

U.S. Puts New Passport Rules on Summer Hiatus

If you recall .. as of January 23, 2007, a new American law required everyone entering the United States by air to have a passport.

Entry Into Force of the Tax Convention Between Canada and Finland

The following Notice of Tax Treaty Developments has just been posted on the Finance Canada Site.

January 17, 2007

The Convention between Canada and Finland for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income entered into force on January 17, 2007. The Convention was signed on July 20, 2006. In accordance with Article 27 of the Convention, its provisions have effect, in respect of withholding taxes, on amounts paid or credited to non-residents on or after January 1, 2006; and in respect of other taxes, for taxation years beginning on or after January 1, 2006.

The Convention replaces the tax treaty signed in 1990 between Canada and Finland.

December Canada Child Tax Benefit payments

Ottawa, December 13, 2005… The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) issued the December Canada Child Tax Benefit (CCTB) payments on December 13, 2005, totalling more than $781 million, to more than 2.8 million recipients across Canada.

Recipients who are expecting a benefit payment and have not received it by December 20, should contact the Agency’s CCTB enquiry service at 1-800-387-1193. This service is available weekdays from 8:15 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., local time.

Canada Revenue Agency interest rates for the first calendar quarter

Ottawa, December 2, 2005… The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) today announced the prescribed annual interest rates that will apply to any amounts owed to the CRA and to any amounts the CRA owes to individuals and corporations. These rates are calculated quarterly in accordance with applicable legislation and will be in effect from January 1, 2006, to March 31, 2006.
