Sigma APO 80-400mm F4.5-5.6 EX OS is one of several new products introduced at Photokina 2002 by Sigma Corporation of Japan (2-3-15, Iwado-Minami, Komae-shi, Tokyo, Japan).

Sigma’s advanced Optical Stabilizer (OS) allows you to take great pictures with a long lens, even in low-light conditions. The image on the left was taken without Sigma’s OS; the image on the right was taken with Sigma’s OS.
Sigma’s OS (Optical Stabilizer) system detects camera shake by utilizing two sensors, and then by the movement of an optical stabilizing lens group. It is equipped with two optical stabilizer modes to compensate for image blurring.

Mode 1, determines the camera shake in vertical and horizontal panning and compensates blurring, this mode is effective when shooting static subjects.

Mode 2, detects the vertical camera shake, and overcomes blurring. It is especially effective with moving subjects such as motor sports etc.

Two Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass elements in the front lens group and one in the rear group offer effective control of color aberration. This lens features full-time manual focusing and a removable tripod collar. The rear focus system prevents the front of the lens from rotating; a circular polarizing filter can be easily attached and used. This lens is also equipped with Zoom Lock Switch that eliminates “Zoom Creep”. When this lens is used with the 1.4x EX or 2x EX Apo Tele Converters (optional), it becomes a 112-560mm F6.3-7.8 MF telephoto lens or a 160-800mm F9-11 MF ultra-telephoto lens respectively. The lens materials used in this new lens are lead and arsenic free ecological glass.

Good Price and Size, December 12, 2005

Those that have been watching these laser measures will note that they cost $1000′s of dollars just a few years ago. This one is under $100. Wow. I guess that’s the good news. The bad news is that you do give up a bit for the cheaper price.

I have a Disto laser measure that I got for about $400 a year ago. It has Leica opticals just like this Stanley unit. Its accuracy is +/- 1/16″ at 650 feet. The Stanley unit has an accuracy of +/- 1/4″ at up to 100 ft. but note that a target is required over 50 ft. I have confirmed the 50 ft. range claim, but it seems to have a good range.

If you don’t need the extreme accuracy, this unit is great. Its the smallest laser measure I’ve ever seen, and its pretty simple to use. Press the button once, the laser is on, press again, it measures. It also can calculate areas, volumes and add or subtract multiple measurements.

While the specs. do mention accuracy, they don’t mention repeatability, which also seems pretty very good. Sometimes, repeatability is more important than accuracy.

In any case, if you can get away with the 1/4″ accuracy, this is a great unit for the price.

Note: Don’t be confused by other cheap devices claiming to be laser measures. If they are under $50, they aren’t. They use ultrasonic sound and have a laser pointer built-in. Even though they look precise because of the laser pointer, they aren’t. An ultrasonic beam at 60 ft. away can be 60 ft. wide. They give a reading, but its hard to tell exactly WHAT they are reading. With this device, you know exactly what you are measuring because it lights up red.

Powered by two AA batteries, it’s got two speeds for superior pumpkin-stock removal, at 6,000 and 12,000 rpm, so it’s not a child’s toy. Here’s how the process goes: Cut a lid in the pumpkin the old-fashioned way and scoop out all the innards, leaving smooth, 1/2-inch thick walls. Stick the template to your pumpkin with spray-on craft adhesive and start tracing the design with the Dremel on the low setting. For larger areas, switch to high. The only trick is trying to remove the same amount of material on all the cuts so the light glows uniformly from inside the pumpkin.
